There is a comfortable story about AI, that it lives in the cloud, weightless and clean. It is not true. Every model that drafts a caption or optimizes an ad is running in a physical building, drawing real power off a real grid, cooled by real water, on real land. The intelligence is abstract. The footprint is not.
We think that fact comes with an obligation. If your business is built on the planet's resources, giving back should not be a press release you issue once a year. It should be wired into how the company runs. That is the standard we set for Axis, and this is how we are holding ourselves to it.
The footprint behind the magic
Data centers, the physical home of every AI system, already account for a meaningful and rising share of global electricity demand. The International Energy Agency tracks their consumption as one of the fastest-growing loads on the world's grids, driven in large part by AI. And electricity is only half of it. Many of those facilities rely on fresh water to stay cool, pulling from the same supplies communities and ecosystems depend on.
None of this is an argument against AI. We are building an AI company on purpose, because used well the technology creates enormous leverage for small businesses. It is an argument for honesty. If we are going to draw on land, water, and power to run Axis, we should be putting something back into exactly those systems.
Our duty: build responsibly, give deliberately
"Give back" is easy to say and easy to fake. So we set two rules for ourselves. First, the causes had to map directly to what AI actually consumes: land and water. Second, the money had to go to organizations that are ruthless about impact, not overhead. That narrowed the field fast, and it led us to two.
Rainforest Trust
Protects endangered rainforest, acre by acre, by partnering with local conservationists across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Founded in 1988, they have helped safeguard tens of millions of acres of critical habitat, and they put 100% of donations toward conservation action, because board members and dedicated supporters cover their operating costs. This is the land side of our footprint, addressed directly. Learn more →
charity: water
Funds clean, safe drinking water for people who lack it, and has reached over 21 million people across 29 countries. Thanks to private donors who cover operations, 100% of public donations fund water projects, and they prove every one with GPS coordinates and photos. It is one of the most transparent nonprofits in the world. This is the water side of our footprint, addressed directly. Learn more →
Land and water. The two resources AI quietly leans on most, matched to two organizations that turn dollars into measurable outcomes.
How giving works during the waitlist
We launched the founding waitlist today, and giving is part of it from the first day. Here is exactly how it works right now, during the waitlist period.
- It is optional. No contribution is ever required to join, use, or pay for Axis. Every dollar is a choice.
- You choose the cause and the amount. Pick Rainforest Trust or charity: water, then $10, $25, $50, or a custom amount.
- 75% goes to the charity you choose. The remaining 25% supports Axis running the program during the waitlist. We state that split plainly.
- You earn Apatite for giving. Contributions earn 10 Apatite per dollar, or 25 per dollar plus 1,000 bonus Apatite and a free month of Silver Axe on contributions over $54.
- It is not tax-deductible. Because contributions run through Axis rather than directly to the charity, they are not tax-deductible. See our terms for the details.
That last point is the kind of thing most companies bury. We are putting it in a bullet, because a giving program that is not honest about its own mechanics is just marketing.
Why 75% and not 100%
The straight answer: during the waitlist, running the program has real costs, and 25% covers them. We could have inflated prices, called it "100% donated," and pocketed the difference through the back door. Plenty do. We would rather show you the exact split and let you judge it.
Our commitment is that as Axis grows, the giving grows with it and gets more efficient, not less. Transparency now is how we earn the right to be trusted later. If you want to give with 100% efficiency today, you can also donate to Rainforest Trust or charity: water directly, and we will always tell you that.
The Axis take
We have written before about the AI era, new human roles, and our duty to nature. This is the practical version of that belief. Technology this powerful should leave the world it runs on better, not just extract from it quietly and move on.
Built from iron, not chaos, has always meant more than clean software. It means being straight about what we take and deliberate about what we give. An AI company that ignores its footprint is not efficient. It is just externalizing the bill. We would rather pay our share, out loud, and invite our members to do the same.
Key takeaways
- AI runs on real electricity, fresh water, and land. The footprint is physical, and rising.
- Axis supports two causes matched to that footprint: Rainforest Trust (land) and charity: water (water).
- During the waitlist, contributions are optional, 75% goes to the chosen charity, and you earn Apatite for giving.
- We state the split and the tax status plainly, because a giving program should be as transparent as the impact it funds.
Frequently asked questions
Does AI really have an environmental footprint?
Yes. The data centers that train and run AI models consume real electricity and draw fresh water for cooling, and their share of global energy demand is rising. The International Energy Agency tracks data centers as a growing part of world electricity use. That footprint is exactly why we build giving into how Axis operates.
Which charities does Axis support?
Two. Rainforest Trust, which protects endangered rainforest acre by acre and puts 100% of donations toward conservation action, and charity: water, which funds clean, safe drinking water and puts 100% of public donations toward water projects with GPS-proofed results.
How does giving work during the Axis waitlist?
Contributions are optional. You choose a cause and an amount, and 75% of each contribution goes to the charity you select while the remainder supports Axis. You earn bonus Apatite for contributing. Contributions are not tax-deductible.
Why does only part of the contribution go to charity?
We are transparent about it: 75% goes to the chosen charity and the rest helps us run the giving program during the waitlist. We state the split plainly rather than implying 100% and quietly keeping a cut.
